Cemeteries & burial plots

The plot, the opening, and the ground rules — literally.

Cemeteries are usually separate businesses from funeral homes, with their own price lists: the plot or niche itself, the fee to open and close the grave, a required outer burial container in most conventional cemeteries, and ongoing care. Religious, municipal, national (veterans), and private cemeteries all price differently — veterans and their spouses are often entitled to no-cost burial in national cemeteries.

When you’ll need them

Within the first few days if burial is planned and no family plot exists. Ask about veteran eligibility before paying for anything.

What it typically costs

Plots typically $1,000–$4,000 in public cemeteries (urban private cemeteries can run far higher); opening and closing $1,000–$2,500; outer burial container or vault around $1,700 median. Columbarium niches for urns typically $700–$3,000.

Typical U.S. ranges, for orientation only — prices vary widely by region and provider. Always ask for an itemized price list.

Questions worth asking

  • What does the plot price include, and what's charged separately?
  • Is an outer burial container required, and can we buy it elsewhere?
  • What are the rules on monuments, plantings, and decorations?
  • Is the person who died (or their spouse) eligible for veterans' burial benefits?
