Cremation services

From direct cremation to a full service with cremation after.

Over half of American families now choose cremation. It ranges from direct cremation — no service through the provider, remains returned to the family, often arranged entirely online — to a traditional funeral with cremation afterward. Direct cremation providers and crematories are often separate businesses from funeral homes, and prices for the same service vary more than almost anything else in death care, so comparing two or three providers is worth the calls.

When you’ll need them

Decided in the first day or two. A memorial service with the urn present can then be scheduled weeks later — one reason many families choose it.

What it typically costs

Direct cremation typically $1,100–$3,000 depending on market. A funeral service with cremation has a U.S. median around $6,300. Crematory fees themselves are often $300–$500 when contracted through a funeral home.

Typical U.S. ranges, for orientation only — prices vary widely by region and provider. Always ask for an itemized price list.

Questions worth asking

  • Is the crematory on-site or contracted out, and can we visit?
  • What is your identification procedure?
  • How and when are the remains returned?
  • Can we hold a witness cremation if the family wants one?
