End-of-life & death doulas

Non-medical support before, during, and just after a death.

Death doulas (end-of-life doulas) provide non-medical support: vigil planning and presence in the final days, guidance for the family on what dying looks like, legacy projects recorded while there's time, and practical orientation in the first days after. They complement hospice rather than replacing it. The field is young and unlicensed, so training and certification (e.g., INELDA, NEDA proficiency) plus references matter more than in established professions.

When you’ll need them

Ideally engaged before the death, during hospice or a final illness; some doulas also support families in the immediate aftermath.

What it typically costs

Typically $25–$100 per hour, or flat vigil/support packages from about $500 to $3,000. Some work on sliding scales.

Typical U.S. ranges, for orientation only — prices vary widely by region and provider. Always ask for an itemized price list.

Questions worth asking

  • What training and certification do you have, and can we speak to references?
  • What does your support include, and where does hospice's role end and yours begin?
  • Are you available for the vigil itself, including nights?
