Grief counseling & support groups
For the part that starts when the paperwork ends.
Grief counselors and therapists (look for experience with bereavement specifically), hospice bereavement programs (most offer 13 months of free follow-up to the family, whether or not you use anything else they offer), and peer support groups — general ones, and specific ones for loss of a child, suicide loss, young widows and widowers. The strongest predictor of who needs professional support isn't how sad someone is early; it's who has no one to talk to by month three.
When you’ll need them
Any time — and worth bookmarking now for the six-week mark, when the casseroles stop and the quiet starts.
What it typically costs
Therapy typically $100–$200 per session (insurance often covers it under mental health benefits). Hospice bereavement programs and most peer support groups are free.
Typical U.S. ranges, for orientation only — prices vary widely by region and provider. Always ask for an itemized price list.
Questions worth asking
