Transportation & repatriation
Hearses, family cars, and bringing someone home from far away.
Local transportation — the hearse, the family limousine, the flower van — is usually arranged through the funeral home. Repatriation (bringing someone home across state lines or from another country) is its own specialty involving airlines' cargo desks, consulates, and shipping-out funeral homes at both ends; international cases genuinely require a specialist, and the receiving funeral home can usually recommend one.
When you’ll need them
Local transport is part of the funeral-home arrangement. Repatriation starts immediately — international cases take one to three weeks.
What it typically costs
Hearse typically $350–$500; family limousine $150–$500. Domestic air transport often $1,500–$4,000 all-in; international repatriation commonly $5,000–$15,000 depending on country and requirements.
Typical U.S. ranges, for orientation only — prices vary widely by region and provider. Always ask for an itemized price list.
Questions worth asking
- For repatriation: who handles the consulate paperwork and the receiving end?
- What does the airline require (container, documentation, embalming)?
- Is ground transport at both ends included in the quote?
